Holiday Travel Tips to Avoid Delays

Friday, December 16th, 2011

CHRISTMAS BALLThe holidays are everyone’s favorite time to travel. While this can make the experience more harrowing, some simple planning can make your holiday journey more enjoyable. To maximize holiday travel happiness and minimize coal-in-the-stocking grief, follow these helpful holiday travel tips.

Bob Diener’s holiday travel tips to avoid delays:

  1. Sign up for airline notifications via text or email to find out if flights are delayed.
  2. Avoid connecting flights wherever possible – as there will be a much lower chance of delay or lost baggage.
  3. Travel Christmas Day or New Years Day – airports are empty and no lines.
  4. Travel early in the morning- airports are less crowded early in the morning and the fares are often less.
  5. Keep all confirmation numbers with you for hotels and car rentals to avoid delays.
  6. Print your boarding passes before you leave home or the office and go right to the security line.
  7. If you are a premium airline member – many airports have special lines that are much shorter.
  8. Check your carry-on luggage before leaving home to make sure there are no liquids – especially in your kids bags. Liquids include shaving cream, shampoo, and creams.
  9. If your flight is delayed or cancelled at the airport – avoid the line by the gate. Pick up your phone and call or go back to the counter where the line may be much shorter.
  10. Sign up for the hotel and car frequent programs – there are usually shorter lines for members and it is FREE.

Dreaming of a White Christmas?

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

dreaming of a white christmas banner

Whether your dream is of deep Colorado powder, the steeps of Utah or the stunning vistas as you cruise perfectly groomed trails in Lake Tahoe, there are a lot of options still out there for travelers who are looking to play in the snow this holiday season. Here are some tips to help you achieve your winter wonderland plans… wherever they may take you. There is nothing quite as romantic as a White Christmas in a Mountain Destination. Many Ski Resorts offer Holiday events to get you in the spirit in between skiing, sledding, snow mobiling and ice skating.

Here are just a few activities you can enjoy this Holiday Season:

  • Vail- Vail Family Holidaze the Holiday Spirit comes alive with concerts, world-class Ice Skating shows, Kid Zone Activities and New Year’s Eve Festivities throughout the month of December.
  • Lake Tahoe - Heavenly Holiday’s Concert Series takes place December 26th through the 28th throughout the Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe to celebrate all the ROCKS about the holiday season.
  • Park City From Santa on the Slopes at The Canyons and Deer Valley  to The Nutcracker, Winter Solstice Light Parade and Christmas Eve Torchlight parade and celebration at Park City Mountain Resort and New Year’s Eve Celebrations everywhere, Park City is the place to be this holiday season.

If you think it is too late to book your holiday vacation, think again!  Many hotels and condos have last minute availability and in fact, last minute discounts.  Here are a few:

  • Lake Tahoe Tahoe Beach and Ski in South Lake Tahoe and Cal Neva Resort Spa & Casino all have plenty of space available during peak season with 18 ski areas to explore in or near Lake Tahoe, you may just want to take off the entire month of January… Tell your boss, you need to “hibernate”.
  • VailThe Evergreen Lodge and Vail Racquet Club have plenty of availability.  You might even catch a flash sale here and there – keep an eye out!
  • Park City – There is still some space left in town, like at Park City Peaks where you can stay this holiday season for just $159.  But the real deals are to be found just a short drive outside the area.  Look to properties like Zermatt in Midway where the rooms are 30% off starting at $83!

Tips:  Many hotels and condominiums have recently dropped their length of stay restrictions, so check again… that perfect condo that was not available a week ago, might just have what you are looking for right now!
