Smart Summer Travel Gadgets

Friday, August 6th, 2010

vacationing - gadgetsEvery traveler knows that a vacation is not a vacation without at least a few handy gizmos to enhance the overall experience. Though the whole point of a vacation is to disconnect, nowadays many of us find it nearly impossible to do so – whether it’s prompted by a mounting workload left behind at the office or simply the urge to stay on top of your latest batch of Tweets. That’s where nifty travel devices from travel adapters to language translators come in, all of which help to alleviate some of the stresses of travel. You don’t have to be a tech guru to appreciate how the four gadgets below can make excellent travel companions for the summer.

1. Kensington Travel Plug Adapter: Priced at $19.99 and weighing just 8 ounces, the Kensington Travel Plug Adapter makes both an affordable and lightweight tool to keep your iPhone, iPod, camera, notebook or other mobile device charged on the go – especially if you plan to travel outside of the country. In fact, the pocket-size device features AC power plugs – all are built into the adapter itself – for more than 150 different countries. A built-in safety release button and fuse ensure safe operation, and the adapter comes with a 1-year warranty. How’s that for staying connected while abroad?

2. SteriPen: Contaminated water is a leading cause of illness in travelers, hence the reason why many travelers refrain from drinking tap water while on airplanes and at hotels, stores and restaurants in their target destination. That won’t be necessary, however, if you’re thirsty for water and have a SteriPEN in tow. Compact and portable, the SteriPEN – its name being a nod to its neat pen-like appearance and capacity to sterilize water – uses UV light to kill off 99.9% of viruses, bacteria and protozoa that produce water-borne illness. Not only does it work faster than chemical treatments, but it doesn’t have the unpleasant taste of iodine or chlorine. Plus, this handy gadget has earned the Water Quality Association’s Gold Seal. Talk about seeing water in a whole new light!

3. Nikon GPS Geotagging Device: How often have you glanced at pictures taken on vacation and had trouble recalling the name of the river, bridge, street or famous landmark that graces the background? With the Nikon GP-1 GPS Unit firmly affixed to your Nikon camera, you’ll be able to remember the exact coordinates of where you snap every single photo.  Moreover, geotags can be added to your images so you can record longitude, latitude, altitude and time information. To put it another way, it’s like having a slick device that takes the place of your memory as needed. The only caveat, of course, is that you’ll need a Nikon camera. laptop gadgets beach

4. Franklin Speaking 12-Language Translator: Interested in boning up on your Spanish before traveling to sunny Miami? How about polishing your French ahead of your trip to New Orleans? The TGA-490 pocket-size translator by Franklin translates and speaks over 200,000 words and 12,000 travel phrases in 12 languages. In addition, Franklin’s phonetic spell correction allows you to enter words by how they sound. Other great features include five games, a local/world clock, metric converter, and a Databank that stores and instantly retrieves important names and numbers.

Although these products won’t ease all of your travel worries, they make great finds for summer travel and will help keep you at least a tad more relaxed and occupied. After all, a vacation should be as stress-free as possible!

Book Early and Stay Longer for Bigger Savings

airplanegetaroom.com President and Co-Founder Bob Diener sat with Michael Finney of The View from the Bay, which airs weekdays at 3:00 pm on ABC7 News (KGO TV) in the San Francisco Bay Area, to discuss how consumers can take advantage of great travel deals for their next trip.

Most travelers think they can only find the lowest hotel rates on the internet.  However, hundreds of getaroom properties in top cities including New York, Boston and Chicago are participating in getaroom.com’s unpublished rates program. Here’s how it works: By calling 800-HOTELS-8 (800-468-3578) and asking for “unpublished rates,”  you can lock in rates for select hotels that are typically 10-25% less than those found on the hotel’s own website, getaroom.com and other major websites.  Though the internet may seem like the best way to go for big savings on hotel accommodations, picking up the phone and booking via getaroom.com’s Call Center can actually be easier on your pocketbook!vacation

Bob adds that travelers booking their rooms online can avail of timed promotions, which allow them to save 20-40% off normal room rates provided that they book during a limited time period.  (Such time periods may vary from a few hours to as much as three days.)  Even if your stay isn’t for another couple of months, booking now can save you more later. Waiting until the last minute to book meant bigger savings in 2009. According to Bob, that isn’t the case this year, as rates are markedly higher closer to check-in.

Further, consumers can enjoy cheaper rates if they stay mid-week (Sunday-Thursday) as opposed to weekends. And if you usually book 1-2 night stays, consider extending your length of stay by one or two nights. Staying longer can actually save you up to 25% more on your final bill.

Looking for the ultimate bargain destination this summer?  Bob suggests you add glitzy Las Vegas to your travel itinerary. Rooms at the 5-star Luxury Suites International at The Signature, for example, start as low as $92/night.  A great choice for the budget-conscious, the AAA Four-Diamond Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino is located in the heart of the Fremont Street Experience and has rooms from $39/night.  Bargains are also up for grabs at other premier destinations including Orlando, New Orleans, Miami, Tampa, London, Paris and Barcelona.

Five Tips for Saving Money on a Florida Vacation

Friday, April 30th, 2010

florida travelTake a moment to think of cities whose name alone conjures up images of sun soaked beaches, tantalizing nightlife and some of the most exciting theme parks known to man. More likely than not, two of Florida’s foremost leisure destinations – Miami and Orlando – stand out prominently in your mind. The former was tied with Washington D.C. for fourth place in Forbes’ list of America’s Most Entertaining Cities (2009). Not surprisingly, Orlando and Tampa were well represented in Forbes’ list of the Top 25 Most Visited Tourist Destinations in America (2009), with Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, Universal Orlando Resort/Islands of Adventure, SeaWorld Orlando and Busch Gardens Tampa Bay all making the cut. Even West Palm Beach, known for its historic neighborhoods and lively festivals, has been cited as one of the country’s best places to live and work. Has this whet your appetite for an affordable vacation in the Sunshine State this year? If so, heed the tips below to savor the best of sultry Florida without putting a dent in your bank account.

1. Book early!

200243296-001If you’re a price-conscious traveler, it’s definitely in your best interest to book as many months in advance of your trip as possible. The travel industry has seen a marked shift in a year’s time: Whereas travelers could afford to wait until the last minute to book the lowest rates on accommodations in 2009, they are now being saddled with higher rates closer to check-in. Though the internet might seem like the best option for finding the lowest rates, you can lock in even bigger savings by picking up the phone. For example, by calling getaroom.com’s Call Center, travelers can take advantage of unpublished rates typically 10-25% and as much as 50% lower than those listed online. A wealth of hotel deals are up for grabs in properties including the Walt Disney World Swan Resort in Orlando, the Majestic Hotel South Beach in Miami, Sunset Vistas Beachfront Suites in Tampa and The Bradley Park Hotel in West Palm Beach.

2. Complimentary is key.

I think we’d all agree that while cheap is good, free sounds a lot better. Orlando properties including the Regal Sun Resort, Royal Plaza Hotel and Sheraton Vistana Villages offer free internet access plus complimentary shuttle service to all four Walt Disney World theme parks. If you’re traveling with kids, you’ll be save a bundle on food costs thanks to Kids Eat Free programs offered by the Regal Sun Resort, Royal Plaza Hotel, Comfort Inn Lake Buena Vista, and other select hotels. If the hotel doesn’t carry an entertainment book, you might be able to snag one at a pit stop convenience store. These handy books are chock full of restaurant coupons and convenient discounts on Florida attractions ranging from the Museum of Science and Industry in Tampa to Gatorland in Orlando. If you’d rather scour the internet for bargains, try sites like orlandocoupons.com.

3. Purchase theme park tickets early and online.

You’ll no doubt save time and money by purchasing park passes online before arrival. For example, by purchasing Univfour disney theme parksersal Orlando tickets online, you can save $10 off the gate price on all multi-day tickets as well as receive a coupon book with up to $150 in savings with any multi-day park-to-park ticket purchase. Here’s an unbeatable deal for Tampa-bound travelers: Florida residents with a 2010 Busch Gardens Fun Card need only pay less than the cost of a 1 day visit ($69.95) to get into Busch Gardens free for the rest of the year. Walt Disney World also offers discount programs for Florida residents, including 4 Days for $99 with the 4 Day Dream Pass. Even if you’re not a Florida resident, you can lock in substantial savings with a Walt Disney World Pass, which allows year-round, unlimited admission to all 4 Disney parks plus discounts on dining, sports and recreation, tours and much more.

4. Take advantage of membership discount programs and Twitter deals.

If you’re a member of AAA or AARP, you can enjoy a wealth of membership benefits including reduced hotel rates.  By simply showing your card, you can save on everything from car rentals and apparel to sports and dining. Plus, AAA and AARP members are eligible for discounted admission rates at most theme parks. For example, with your AAA card, you can save $3 on regular all-day admission to Adventure Island in Tampa, Busch Gardens, SeaWorld Orlando and Wet ‘n Wild. In addition, by following your favorite travel companies on Twitter, you can gain access to exclusive travel deals available only for a limited time.

5. Enjoy a bevy of free Florida sites and attractions.

Travelers can frequent some of the state’s most popular sites and attractions – starting with its unspoiled beaches – without having to shell out a dime. The state is also replete with verdant parks of varying sizes – from Tropical Park in Miami to Big Tree Park in Orlando – where you can enjoy such family-friendly leisure activities as fishing, hiking, bike riding and canoeing.

While the temperature in Florida is on the rise, your travel expenses don’t have to be. With a little planning, a Florida vacation could wind up being much more affordable than you’d expect. So head for the Sunshine State and have a whale of a time – just don’t forget to bring the sunscreen along!

getaroom.com President Bob Diener Shares Travel Tips, Trends & Deals

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

getaroom.com President and travel expert Bob Diener shared loads of money-saving travel tips, trends and deals on Sonoron Living Live, which is aired on ABC15-TV in Phoenix.

To get the most bang for their buck, Bob recommends that travelers book in advance. Unlike last year when travelers could wait until the last minute to book at the lowest room rates, hotel rates in destinations including New York, Miami and Washington D.C. are now shooting up closer to check-in. If at all possible, plan your stay for early in the week. Hotel rooms are generally more expensive on Friday and Saturday than they are Sunday through Thursday; plus, Bob adds that many properties offer free-night stays when travelers book a minimum number of room nights.

If you think the rates on the website are cheap, you might be able to lock in even cheaper ones via the phone. By calling the call center at 800-HOTELS 8 (800-468-3578), travelers gain access to unpublished rates typically 10-25% less than those listed on getaroom.com and other travel websites.

In case you didn’t know, the Entertainment Capital of the World, Las Vegas, is also one of the world’s top bargain destinations. If you’re traveling on a budget, you’ll be hard-pressed to find cheaper rates than those currently offered at many Las Vegas hotels. Luxury Suites at The Signature at MGM Grand, a 5 star property in the heart of the Las Vegas Strip, has rooms starting at $92/night. Other Strip hotels including the Sahara Hotel and Casino and Tropicana Las Vegas combine rousing casino action with a wealth of dining and entertainment options for under $30/night.

Bob also highlighted three exceptional hotels on the west coast: the recently renovated Radisson LA Westside Hotel in Culver City, the historic Westin St. Francis in the heart of San Francisco on Union Square, and Cova Hotel, a downtown San Francisco hotel that offers free breakfast and complimentary transportation to Union Square and the Moscone Center.

Great deals are to be had in New York, Boston, Chicago and other fine hot spots. Book now and keep more money in your pocket!
