Nothing says Independence Day quite like a colorful and thundering fireworks display, and if you’re lucky enough to be in any of the major destinations noted below this 4th of July, you’ll have a front row seat to some of the nation’s most dazzling pyrotechnic spectacles. Whether you plan on spending the holiday in the nation’s capital, the Big Apple, or even sunny Orlando, you can soak up patriotic spirit while marveling at colorful explosions that light up the night sky. To boot, parades, historic tours, concerts and other extras ensure there’s plenty to do for people of all ages. Travelers still have time to lock in low rates on airfare and score great July 4th hotel deals. Read on for a sampling of July 4th events you don’t want to miss.
1. Washington, D.C.: Washington D.C. is unquestionably the most fitting place to soak up a fun-filled day of 4th
of July festivities. The National Mall, with the U. S. Capitol and Washington Monument in the background, creates a stunning backdrop to the country’s 4th of July celebrations. This all-day event in the nation’s capital kicks off with a parade along Constitution Avenue from NW 7th to 17th Streets. During the day, you can enjoy readings of the Declaration of Independence at the National Archives, dance performances and cooking demonstrations at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, and an evening concert by the National Symphony Orchestra on the West Lawn. Immediately following the concert, a spectacular display of fireworks over the Capitol Building and Washington Monument caps off an unforgettable day in history-rich D.C.
2. Boston: Another of the nation’s premier destinations for history buffs, Boston was the site of major events in American History, from the Boston Massacre to the Boston Tea Party. The 29th annual Boston Harborfest is a multi-day Fourth of July celebration featuring hundreds of events throughout the historic city, many being free of charge. Boston Harborfest draws more than 2.5 million visitors to Boston each July, thus making it one of the nation’s largest patriotic celebrations. This year, Boston Harborfest runs June 30 through July 5. Featuring a variety of children’s activities, historic tours, concerts and Revolutionary era reenactments, it’s no wonder the American Bus Association has named Boston Harborfest one of North America’s Top 100 Events for 2010. The Fourth of July Pops Concert at the Esplanade precedes an impressive showcase of fireworks over the Charles River. Don’t miss Chowderfest on Monday, July 5, which affords visitors a unique opportunity to savor Boston’s most popular chowder concoctions.
3. New York City: Everyone knows it is home to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and widely-watched New Year’s Eve Ball Drop in Times Square. But New York City also delivers one of the biggest Fourth of July firework displays in the nation. The Macy’s July 4th fireworks display originally made its debut on the Hudson River in 1958. This year, the Macy’s fireworks show will feature more than 40,000 shells exploding at a whopping rate of more than 1,500 per minute and fireworks soaring up to 1,000 feet in the air. At approximately 9:20 pm on July 4th, the 26-minute display will be set off from six barges set between 24th and 50th Streets on the Hudson River. The fireworks will mark not only America’s birthday, but also the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s exploration of his namesake river. American Harmony is the theme of this year’s fireworks spectacular. Alternatively, join Big Onion Walking Tours at 1 p.m. for a walking tour of sites related to the Revolutionary War in Lower Manhattan, including Federal Hall.
4. Orlando: Orlando’s thrilling, world-famous theme parks – from Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort to SeaW
orld Orlando – each offer a bevy of fireworks celebrations you’ll definitely want to check out. Among them is Universal 360 – A Cinesphere Spectacular, which will start on July 4 and run most nights through August 8 at Universal Orlando Resort. The show employs four-story-tall, 360-degree projection “cinespheres,” outdoor speakers, music, lasers and pyrotechnic effects to position guests in the very center of their favorite films. The Fourth of July Cinesphere show will also include a thrilling finale complete with an eye-catching fireworks display. Otherwise, you can make plans to celebrate the Fourth of July with friends and family at the 2010 City of Kissimmee July 4th Celebration, which offers live entertainment, arts and crafts, a food festival, water-ski show, and – you guessed it – a brilliant fireworks display for free.
5. Los Angeles: If you’re spending the 4th of July on the west coast, consider taking an excursion to Los Angeles to take part in Southern California’s popular fireworks events. Among them is the 4th of July AmericaFest at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, which combines great music, excellent food, and fireworks galore. On July 4, tens of thousands will also descend on the community of Pacific Palisades for the Americanism Parade on Sunset Boulevard before lapping up family-friendly entertainment, patriotic songs and breathtaking fireworks at the second annual Palisades Rocks the Fourth concert at Palisades Charter High School.
As you can see, there are plenty of things to do in celebration of our nation’s 234th birthday. Whether your idea of a memorable 4th of July involves marching along Constitution Avenue, admiring a beautiful fireworks display over the Capitol Building, braving a daring roller coaster at a Walt Disney World theme park, or touring Boston’s historic neighborhoods, Independence Day 2010 promises to offer something for everyone.

There’s no doubt that Europe teems with history and culture, as evidenced by scores of historic landmarks that have stood the test of time and for centuries drawn curious travelers from all parts of the world. You don’t have to be a history buff to appreciate the unique sites and attractions that make London, France, Barcelona and Florence some of the world’s most coveted destinations. If you book now, you can take advantage of great European summer deals on hotel accommodations. Read on for some can’t-miss landmarks and venues in these venerable, picture-ready cities.
1. London, UK: After gazing at and photographing 100-year old Big Ben, stately Buckingham Palace, and the centuries-old Tower of London, you can get up close and personal with London’s history at its various museums. Check out a whopping collection of more than 7 million items from around the world at the British Museum, which was established in 1753. Also a popular tourist attraction in its own right is the Victoria and Albert Museum, situated minutes away from Grosvenor Kensington and the Millennium Gloucester Hotel. The world’s largest museum of decorative arts and design, it encompasses some 12.5 acres and more than 140 galleries. If history doesn’t tickle your fancy, pay a visit to one of London’s many locales for pop and rock music, including Wembley Arena and Earls Court. Music enthusiasts will love the annual Wireless Festival in Hyde Park. Additionally, those looking to commune with nature can walk to the Royal Parks of Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, or Regent’s Park, the latter containing the hugely popular London Zoo. Within close proximity to these lush parks are the Hyde Park Premier London Paddington Hotel and the Shaftesbury Metropolis London Hyde Park Hotel.
2. Paris, France: Just as the Statue of Liberty is inextricably tied to New York City, Paris is synonymous with the iconic 1,063-foot-tall Eiffel Tower, only a short stroll from Paris Eiffel Cambronne. But there’s a lot more to Paris than this towering structure. With 8.5 visitors in 2009, the Louvre topped the list of the world’s most visited museums. (The aforementioned British Museum came in second with 5.93 million visitors.) Boasting Art Deco architecture, the 2,800-seat Le Grand Rex is the largest theater and music venue in all of Paris. And approximately 20 miles from the centre of Paris sits Disneyland Paris, which comprises two theme parks as well as a dining, retail and entertainment district. Hotels including Hotel California Paris and Hotel Keppler lie near Champs-Elysees, a world-renowned avenue known for its cafes and specialty shops.
3.
Barcelona, Spain: If you’re looking to get a tan this summer, look no further than Spain’s charming capital. Its seven pristine beaches – the largest and most frequented being the Barceloneta and Sant Sebastia beaches – span nearly three miles of coastline. Plaça de Catalunya, a large, bustling square in central Barcelona, offers a range of theaters, restaurants, shopping centers and hotels, including H10 Catalunya Plaza. There is no shortage of greenery here, as Barcelona contains more than 60 parks. You’ll find some of the city’s finest shopping centers, shops, restaurants and theaters along Avinguda Diagonal, which crosses the city in diagonal fashion and essentially cuts it in two. What’s more, HCC Covadonga and the 4 star Hesperia Sagrada Familia Sport & Spa make two easily accessible lodging options.
4. Florence, Italy: Boasting some of the world’s most famous art galleries and palaces, it’s no surprise that the historically and culturally rich city of Florence is regarded by many as the art capital of Italy. (After all, such historic figures as Leonardo da
Vinci, Botticelli and Galileo Galilei were either born in or made their homes here.) Among the city’s more notable galleries is The Gallery of the Accademia di Belle Arti, which has housed Michaelangelo’s David sculpture since 1873. And if you’re looking to get your shop on, this is the place to be! World-famous fashion boutiques from Armani to Bulgari line Via de’ Tornabuoni, one of the city’s best spots for upscale shopping. You’ll also encounter a number of open air markets that sell budget-friendly food, clothing and antiques. Alternatively, you can amble through Boboli Gardens, which features lush landscaping, beautiful waterfalls and centuries-old sculptures. The park also makes an ideal place to take in picturesque views of Florence. A number of hotels lie in or near the city’s centre, from Residence San Niccolo to Mulino di Firenze.
Whether you’re big on art, history, nature, or sunbathing, Europe has something for every taste. Why limit yourself to admiring Europe’s amazing sites and attractions via magazine pictures and glossy postcards sent to you from well-traveled friends? Pack your bags and cure your European wanderlust by experiencing in person all these magical cities have to offer.

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, you’re probably searching for the perfect gift. You might be contemplating whether to give mom a new dress, an upgraded kitchen appliance, or another fine piece of jewelry she can add to her collection. But such a gift does little to relieve the daily stress of work and family life. Between putting in late hours at the office, cooking, cleaning, and helping the kids with their homework, mom is probably in serious need of a breather. A Mother’s Day spa getaway could be just what the doctor ordered. Each spa is an oasis of calm and tranquility in its own right, a world in sharp contrast to the hustle and bustle of the vibrant city beyond its walls. For the weekend of May 7-9, let mom know that worries of any kind are to stay behind at home. No matter where you’re traveling to, the spas housed in the hotels highlighted below make perfect places to relax, replenish and rejuvenate on Mother’s Day weekend. We also touch upon on-site fitness centers where mom can squeeze in time for a workout.
1. New York City – Affinia Dumont: If mom is a serious fitness enthusiast, she’ll feel right at home in this luxurious Midtown East property. A Fitness Suite Hotel, Affinia Dumont boasts 241 spacious suites, each complete with fitness-related amenities, and a VIP Fitness Suite that has its own private exercise studio with steam room. If mom needs advice on staying fit, she can get great tips from the onsite fitness concierge, who provides body assessments and body-mass-index-measurements free of charge. Guests can enjoy complimentary Experience Kits, which come in three types (Walking Tour, StayFit and BYOB), are delivered in baskets, and, depending on the Kit received, include goodies ranging from iPod Shuffles and towels to picnic blankets. The second floor is home to Oasis Day Spa, where a relaxing massage, facial, manicure or pedicure sets the tone for a stress-melting weekend in the Big Apple. The spa offers a number of options to suit your budget and mom’s preferences, including its Total Body Wellness Deluxe and Total Body Wellness packages.
2. Los Angeles – Luxe Hotel Sunset Boulevard: Perched at the intersection of Brentwood and Bel Air, this chic boutique hotel’s spa offers a wide array of treatments designed to refresh and rejuvenate the mind, body and spirit. Mom can do away with those painful knots by indulging in a Be Well Massage or detoxify the face with a soothing Be Well Facial. Many of these revitalizing treatments can be enjoyed right by the swimming pool. Also located in the Spa Level building is the hotel’s well equipped fitness center, where mom can take advantage of treadmills and exercise bikes to maintain her fitness routine. If you’re bringing a big group along, the Luxe Spa can organize a customized Spa Party that comprises skin and body treatments, catering and much more. How’s that for a stress-free Mother’s Day celebration?
3. San Francisco – Westin St. Francis: If you’re planning on spending Mother’s Day weekend in the City by the Bay, The St. Francis Renewal and WestinWORKOUT at the historic Westin St. Francis offers a refreshing alternative to the standard downtown San Francisco day spa experience. Mom can choose from a range of massage therapies, body treatments, skincare services and nail services. Additionally, WestinWORKOUT features a bevy of treadmills, stairmasters and steam rooms to melt all of mom’s concerns away. If the kids will be tagging along, be advised that guests must be at least 16 years of age to utilize spa services and facilities. While mom immerses herself in tranquility and relaxation, the youngsters can stay entertained at the Westin Kids Club.
4. Las Vegas – The Venetian Las Vegas: If you’re thinking about taking mom to sizzling Las Vegas, she’ll likely be floored by the sheer number of restaurants and shops that line the Las Vegas Strip. Sooner or later, however, she might come to want some respite from the always-lively pulse of Sin City, and that’s where the Five-Diamond all-suite resort’s Canyon Ranch SpaClub and Fitness Center comes in. Invite mom to indulge in a massage or facial, try the 40-foot rock-climbing wall, or take a fitness class inside this 134,000 square-foot haven of rejuvenation. She can also awaken the senses at Aquavana, a complete European-inspired suite of thermal spa cabins, tubs and aquathermal bathing experiences. The spa’s numerous accolades speak for themselves; among them are being named Best Day Spa by the Las Vegas Review-Journal six of the last seven years and garnering a four-star rating by Mobil Travel Guide six years running.
Without a doubt, a spa getaway is not your run of the mill present, and you can rest assured that mom will thank you for it. That said, break the mold this Mother’s Day and coddle mom with a soothing spa experience she won’t soon forget!

Most travelers are drawn to and book hotels for the wealth of amenities they offer – from spas and swimming pools to complimentary breakfast to award-winning restaurants. However, it is the revered history of the properties themselves that often goes overlooked. While standing the test of time, historic hotels have become deeply woven into the fabric of the cities they grace, many becoming focal points of artistic and literary life. Select hotels have undergone renovations that have brought them back to their original splendor while respecting the original details that vacationers, business travelers and renowned celebrities alike marveled at when the hotels first opened their doors. You don’t have to be a history buff to appreciate their period furniture, timeless sophistication and close proximity to landmark attractions. Before you make your next booking, read on and take a trip down memory lane.
Algonquin Hotel: Named one of “America’s Ten Great Historic Hotels” in the premiere issue of Historic Traveler Magazine, The Algonquin opened its doors at 44th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues in 1902, just minutes from New York City’s world-famous Theater District. Despite undergoing renovations in 1998 and 2004, it has all but lost its original splendor. Timeless elegance will surround you as soon as you step into the Algonquin’s restored lobby, which boasts oak panels and Edwardian furniture in jewel tones. Designated a New York City landmark in 1987 and a literary landmark in 1996, the hotel’s Round Table Room is named for the celebrated group of writers, critics and actors – among them were Robert Benchley and Alexander Woollcott – who gathered at the hotel daily to dine, share ideas and play cards. You’ll also step back in time to a more glamorous era while in the Oak Room, which offers dinners and performances seasonally Tuesday through Thursday each week. With its white tablecloths, dark paneled walls and gleaming piano, the room was a launching pad for such renowned celebrities as Andrea Marcovicci and Harry Connick Jr.
Westin St. Francis: Perhaps best known for the historic Magneta Grandfather Clock that adorns its lobby, this Union Square hotel is suffused with early 20th century charm. Opened in 1904, the hotel was gutted in the fire that took place following an earthquake that rocked San Francisco on April 18, 1906. Reconstruction was completed in 1907 and the hotel in turn reopened that same year. Throughout the years, the hotel has played host to such acclaimed figures as Douglas MacArthur, Ernest Hemingway and several U.S. presidents. The Westin St. Francis’ rooms exude turn-of-the-century sophistication with ornate woodworking, high ceilings with shimmering chandeliers, and windows opening out onto the city by the bay. Moreover, the property is widely considered the center of the city’s literary, social and artistic life.

The Lenox Hotel: A prestigious member of Historic Hotels of America and Small Luxury Hotels of the World, The Lenox Hotel in Boston’s historic Back Bay is a prime example of a property that fuses old-world charm with modern technology. The Lenox was the tallest building in Boston at the time of its opening in 1900. Over the years, the hotel has become a popular refuge of big names in business, entertainment, sports and the arts, from noted opera singer Enrico Caruso and actress Judy Garland to former Boston Celtics basketball coach Red Auerbach. The Lenox has notched 12 consecutive AAA Four Diamond Awards since 1998 and boasts an opulent ballroom, fine restaurants and sumptuous accommodations, each bedecked with mahogany furniture, high ceilings with brass chandeliers and Italian marble bathrooms.
Boston Park Plaza Hotel & Towers: Yet another Back Bay hotel steeped in Boston’s venerable history is the lovely Boston Park Plaza Hotel & Towers. A member of Historic Hotels of America, the property has drawn a host of U.S. presidents and celebrities since its inception in 1927. It is located only 200 yards from the nation’s first public parks, Boston Common and Public Garden, the latter of which served as the inspiration for the hotel’s logo. It was also the first hotel to feature many of the standard conveniences we find in hotel rooms today, such as guestroom radios and telephones. Boston Park Plaza Hotel & Towers is conveniently located near Newbury Street shopping, Faneuil Hall Marketplace, and Boston’s theater and financial districts.
Le Pavillon Hotel New Orleans: A proud recipient of the AAA Four Diamond Award since 1996, this elegant hotel in the heart of downtown New Orleans is a member of both the Leading Hotels of the World and Historic Hotels of America. Upon opening its doors in 1907, the hotel boasted the first hydraulic elevators ever to be installed in New Orleans, as well as the first basement ever built in the historic city. The hotel came under new ownership in 1970, a year that saw the addition of crystal chandeliers from Czechoslovakia, marble railings from the Paris Grand Hotel, Italian columns and statues, and antiques from all over the world to complement the hotel’s quaint, old-world charm.
There’s no question that there’s more to these hotels than meets the eye. So, next time you book a hotel room, do some research on the properties listed above or others you have your sights set on. You’re likely to dig up some interesting stuff!

Thankfully, the frigid days of winter are behind us and spring has almost sprung. There’s nothing like the sound of chirping birds and the smell of blooming flowers to remind us that sleet and snow will give way to much-longed-for sunshine, setting the stage for the perfect Easter egg hunt or parade. These events, some of which are expected to draw thousands, will take center stage in some of the country’s hottest spring break destinations, from vibrant New York City to historic New Orleans. No matter the occasion, people of all ages will be basking in spring fun. Read on for a smattering of parades and egg hunts scheduled to hit major cities in April or sooner.
New York City
If you plan to be in New York City on Easter Sunday (April 4), join hundreds as they stroll along Fifth Avenue from 49th to 57th streets for the Easter Parade & Easter Bonnet Festival, an annual tradition that dates back to Civil War days. Unlike most parades, this one does not feature marching bands or floats. Instead, people come from all corners of the world to sport some of the fanciest Easter bonnets imaginable. From Civil War period costumes to animal-patterned attire, outfits range from elegant to outlandish, and you’re just as likely to find them donned by pets as you are their owners. The Easter Parade & Easter Bonnet Festival runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. What’s more, free admission makes the event both fun and easy on the pocket.
San Francisco
Travelers in or near the Bay Area can take part in the 19th annual Union Street Spring Celebration and Easter Parade on Easter Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Expected to attract 30,000 attendees, the parade will feature live music, inflatable bounces, a climbing wall, vintage cars, stilt walkers, kids’ rides, and a hands-on activities area. Those on hand can enjoy al fresco dining while watching the parade wind its way between Gough and Filmore Streets. Families have been known to call this the biggest little parade in San Francisco.
Washington D.C.
If the kids enjoy Easter egg rolling, they’ll love rolling hard-boiled colored eggs down the lawns at the White House this year. T
he White House Easter Egg Roll is set to take place at our nation’s capital April 5 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The tradition stretches back to 1878, when President Rutherford B. Hayes declared that neighborhood children were allowed convene on the White House lawn to play Easter games after Congress had banned them from the Capitol grounds. The Egg Roll is currently the largest public event at The White House, attracting approximately 40,000 visitors annually. This year’s theme – “Ready, Set, Go!” – is intended to promote health and wellness. Children aged 12 years and younger and their families can enjoy live musical performances, cooking classes and other activities at the South Lawn of the White House for free.
Miami
Miami’s tropical climate makes it a great place for a family vacation year round. If you’re not planning on catching some rays on Miami Beach or strolling by the unique shops of Ocean Drive this Easter, take the kids to Miami Metrozoo for its annual Miami Metrozoo Egg Safari. The event is free with regular admission and runs April 3 and 4 from 11 a.m. through 4 p.m. Youngsters 12 and under can take a photo with the Easter Bunny, cavort in fun bounce houses and enjoy great music. Fun for the whole family also awaits at Miami Seaquarium’s Egg Hunt Celebration, which takes place Friday, April 2 through Sunday, April 4. In addition to the park’s regular shows and exhibits, kids will delight in “Bunny-palo za” which boasts five acres of rides, slides, bounce houses and other fun activities.
New Orleans
The 6th annual Easter On The Avenue Parade, also known as the St. Charles Easter Parade, will roll up and then down gorgeous St. Charles Avenue at 12:15 p.m. on Easter Sunday. The Parade will start at Emeril’s Delmonico Restaurant and make its way around Lee Circle and up Cadiz Street before eventually turning back and returning to the restaurant. Feel free to showcase your Easter finery as you ride in a supplied carriage or convertible. Best of all, there will be throws and surprises for onlookers, so be on the alert! Dino lovers should not miss the Audobon Zoo Dinosaur Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 27 and Sunday, March 28. Kids can make dino crafts, enjoy snacks and hunt for their very own dinosaur eggs. Alternatively, if you’re an avid runner, you can take part in the Crescent City Classic, held on the Saturday of Easter weekend each year. This 10k road race takes runners down Esplanade Avenue, a beautiful tree lined boulevard at the edge of the French Quarter, and ends in picturesque City Park. A post-race party, costume contest and other events follow. Indeed, there’s much more to New Orleans than Mardi Gras!
Easter only comes once a year, as do these fun-packed egg hunts and parades. Whether you plan to go in search of Easter goodies this year or join thousands as they stroll down a busy street, it’s time to spring forward and have some fun.

With spring right around the corner, it’s time to put away the winter gloves and coats and dust off the sun tan lotion and binoculars. To be sure, there’s nothing like being able to soak up rays and refresh in the swimming pool following one of the most intense winter seasons on record – more than 60% of the U.S. was reportedly blanketed in snow earlier this year. That being said, it’s no surprise travelers are more than ready to hit up picturesque beaches, fine restaurants and lively nightclubs in Miami, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and other spring break hot spots as the weather heats up. Read on for a taste of what awaits you at these meccas for fun, sun and much more.
Party in Miami
Known for its pearly white sand beaches and booming nightlife scene, everything about South Beach oozes fun and vibrancy. Fashion shoots and star-studded events are standard here, thus earning Miami a reputation as an oasis for the fashion forward. Shopping options are endless, from the popular Dolphin Mall in Doral to fine boutiques on Ocean Drive to a wide collection of stylish designer stores in the heart of the Collins Avenue Fashion District. Then there’s scores of chic, Art Deco hotels nestled on South Beach, each within minutes of the city’s hippest attractions. Among them are the trendy Whitelaw Hotel; Hotel Chelsea, an Art Deco fixture since 1936; the Beach Paradise Hotel, whose design was inspired by Spanish mansions of old; and the Deauville Beach Resort, which over the years has attracted the likes of celebrities like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin.
Let Loose in Los Angeles
I’d be remiss to discuss Los Angeles shopping and nightlife without highlighting Beverly Hills and West Hollywood. The former includes world-famous Rodeo Drive, a shopping district famous for its upscale boutiques and shops. Passing through West Hollywood is the Sunset Strip, an area where colorful and expansive billboards are easy to find, as are various restaurants, nightclubs, and – if you’re lucky enough – a celebrity or two. Like Miami, Los Angeles is a playground for beachgoers as thousands flock to Venice Beach, among the city’s other sizzling beaches, to catch some rays or hang ten. Hotel Angeleno – a Joie de Vivre Hotel – and Hotel Beverly Terrace, two boutique properties in close proximity to Beverly Hills and Hollywood, make great places to unwind after a day of non-stop action in SoCal.
Live it up in Las Vegas
Dazzling lights and an ever-festive ambiance make Las Vegas a popular vacation hot spot year year-round, and spring break is certainly no exception. With scores of famous casinos, towering hotels, fine shops and renowned restaurants, it’s no surprise the city has been dubbed “The Entertainment Capital of the World.” Most of the world-famous Strip’s best shows and attractions are found on the resort properties that line it. Take Stratosphere Casino, Hotel and Tower. Aside from boasting the largest observation tower in the United States, it proves that Florida and California are far from the only places for theme park thrills. Guests can enjoy heart-pounding rides including X-Scream and Insanity, both of which propel you anywhere from 27 to 64 feet over the edge of the Tower. Racing aficionados will love Speed – The Ride, a state-of-the-art rollercoaster at Sahara Hotel and Casino’s Nascar Cafe Entertainment Center. If your idea of fun involves getting wet, guests should not miss Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino, winner of the AAA Four-Diamond Award each year since 1977. The Tank is a $30 million complex featuring a shark tank, private cabanas and an exhilarating 3-story waterslide.
Tour NYC’s Stellar Attractions
Though New York City likely won’t sit atop your list of top beach destinations anytime soon, it nonetheless has enough attractions to keep travelers, no matter their age, well-entertained over the course of spring break. Catch a New York Knicks game at Madison Square Garden, photograph the Statue of Liberty, watch a show on Broadway, tour the Museum of Modern Art, spend an afternoon unwinding at Central Park, or delight your palate at one of Chinatown’s many fine restaurants. Your options for things to do and places to see are endless. Within walking distance of these attractions is the Belvedere Hotel, an Art Deco style hotel that features a state-of-the-art fitness center and popular Rodizio-style steakhouse, Churrascaria Plataforma. Other notable properties include Affinia Shelburne at Lexington Avenue and the Eastgate Tower Hotel in Murray Hill.
Explore Europe
If you’re looking to break out of your usual routine and travel abroad for spring break this year, you’ll find a wealth of fun things to do and landmark attractions to gawk at in Europe. Among travelers’ favorites: the Louvre and always-striking Eiffel Tower in Paris, the historic Coliseum in Rome, and Museumplein, a spacious square along which four museums are set in art-rich Amsterdam. If you’d rather be doing something a bit more lively, each city hosts tons of exciting events year-round and features plenty of nightclubs, shops, restaurants and sporting venues to suit different tastes. Properties to check out include Villa Eugenie and Tonic Hotel Du Louvre, two of Paris’ finest; Hotel Savoy and the Ripa Hotel, two four-star gems in Rome; and Grand Hotel Amrath, a 5-star masterpiece nestled in the historic heart of Amsterdam.

If you’re planning a trip to the Mid-Atlantic region, you might be thinking New York City is where all the action is. Not so fast. The Big Apple’s cousin to the south, New Jersey, is a great vacation hot spot in its own right. In particular, Atlantic City is steeped in history and teeming with activities, making it a fun-filled destination for couples and families alike. Incorporated in 1854, the seaside resort city has gradually blossomed into one of the country’s go-to places for casino action, vibrant nightlife and relaxation, thanks in part to its prime location along the Atlantic Ocean.
One of the area’s biggest draws is the historic Atlantic City Boardwalk, whose history stretches back to 1870 and along which travelers will find a host of shops, resorts, hotels, piers, arcades, museums and much more. (The Boardwalk is a whopping 60 feet wide and more than 4 feet long.) Among the Boardwalk’s notable attractions are the Atlantic City Aquarium, with more than eighteen exhibits including a 25,000 gallon tank; Gardner’s Basin, a bayside park boasting everything from fine dining to sightseeing cruises; and the Garden Pier, which now houses the Atlantic City historical museum and Art Center. The annual Atlantic City Food and Wine Festival – slated to run July 29 through August 1 – features four jam-packed days of events, celebrity appearances and food and wine tastings. Even if you’re not an aviation junkie, you’ll enjoy “Thunder Over the Boardwalk,” where impressive aerobatics maneuvers and flybys that reach up to 150,000 feet and as low as 50 feet over the water are sure to hold spectators spellbound.
Boardwalk Hall, declared a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 1987, once held one of The Beatles’ largest-ever concerts and currently hosts the Miss’d America Pageant and men’s college basketball games. Lovers of the outdoors can commune with nature at Wharton State Forest while boating buffs will feel right at home at the Farley Marina, whose 640 floating slips can accommodate yachts as long as 300 feet. If traveling from New York City to Atlantic City by train, travelers can take advantage of Atlantic City Express Service (ACES), which runs Friday through Sunday and takes passengers from New York’s Penn Station to Atlantic City Rail Terminal in less than 3 hours on average.
The Atlantic City Hilton Casino Resort is conveniently situated at the top of the Boardwalk. Though you’re more than 2,000 miles away from Las Vegas, you’ll feel immersed in the excitement Sin City gaming while inside the casino, which offers slot and table games including Blackjack, Poker and Roulette. The resort also has a state-of-the-art theater built to showcase the talents of such noted celebrities as KC & the Sunshine Band. Plus, the resort’s 13,000 square-foot Health Spa comprises a steam room, sauna, hot tub and indoor swimming pool.
Affording splendid views of the Atlantic City skyline are Travelodge Bayside and Comfort Bayside Inn. Though a little further from the world-famous Boardwalk – two and four miles away, respectively – both properties suit business travelers and pleasure seekers alike. Travelodge Bayside features an expansive outdoor swimming pool and meeting rooms, while Comfort Bayside Inn offers free Continental breakfast and complimentary shuttle service to the Tropicana Casino on Fridays and Saturdays.
Half a block from the Boardwalk and adjacent to the Tropicana lies the Ascot Motel, a great option for the budget-minded. The outdoor pool is open seasonally (Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend) and guests can start their day off right with complimentary coffee in the lobby. Though the property might be thinner on amenities than its hotel counterparts, that doesn’t mean travelers will have to sacrifice comfort, let alone good service – the front desk is open 24 hours a day. The AAA-rated La Renaissance, meanwhile, is synonymous with family-friendly. Its One and Two Bedroom Suites, all with balconies, feature separate living and dining areas and are spacious enough to sleep anywhere from four to six people.
Though New York City may still lay claim to the title of most popular destination in the Mid-Atlantic, there is no denying Atlantic City holds its own as a place where couples and families alike can lap up a profusion of great attractions.

Pack your bags and indulge in a memorable getaway to any one of the romantic hot spots listed below.
New York City: Before catching a Broadway show with your sweety, a leisurely stroll along postcard-ready Central Park sets a romantic tone for the day. Adjacent to Sunset Park, The Dana Hotel is the closet property to SeaWorld San Diego.
Orlando: Orlando, home to Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando and SeaWorld Orlando, offers couples the opportunity to lose themselves in all the fun and excitement such thrilling parks have to offer. The AAA Four-Diamond Celebration Hotel, only five minutes from Walt Disney World, gives a nod to the past with its 1900s Florida-coastal architecture while offering modern amenities such as high-speed internet access in all accommodations. What’s more, The Plantation Room – the waterfront hotel’s restaurant – has earned a AAA Four-Diamond award itself and was rated as one of Florida’s Best Places to Dine by Florida Trend Magazine.
Chicago: The Windy City, with storied sites and attractions including the imposing Willis Tower, historic Navy Pier and legen
dary Chicago Theatre, makes yet another great Valentine’s Day destination.
